55th Anniversary
H&H Construction Services, Inc. is pleased to announce its 55th anniversary in business. The company was founded in 1951 in Carlinville, Illinois by Charles and Hazel Hudson. Today, H&H is a second-generation family-owned business and has grown to become a significant force in commercial general construction in central and southern Illinois and the greater St. Louis area.
H&H has served countless companies over the years and been successful in developing several areas of expertise, particularly in the aviation and industrial sectors, building aircraft paint hangars for Garrett Aviation, Premier Air and Midcoast Aviation to name a few. They have established a focus on churches and affiliated schools and day cares through their Ministry of Construction program. Several very specialized freezer facilities have been built for clients such as Excel Distribution and Bethel-Eckert and H&H has followed a number of companies into multiple locations – such as Advance Auto Parts and Arby’s Restaurants. Other recent clients have ranged from Weyerhaeuser, Wausau Supply, Ashley Furniture, BJ’s Salon and Spa, Alpine Engineering and True Manufacturing to several retail centers and office facilities.
H&H Construction Services has a solid reputation for job safety—the company has been nationally recognized for its safety record. H&H is a union-affiliated organization, believing strongly in the professionalism and training programs offered by the union construction trades. H&H is also solidly built on the foundation of “building community.” The whole company has been involved in projects for Habitat for Humanity, Easter Seals, United Cerebral Palsy and numerous other organizations over the years. They believe strongly in the concept of “giving back.”
According to Jim Hudson, owner and CEO, “We are excited about H&H celebrating 55 years in business this year. Our construction sales have grown nearly 3000% in the past two decades. It will be our continuing goal to focus on providing the best quality of construction to our clients that they can find anywhere. We keenly recognize that it is our employees that make us successful. We have a terrific team of qualified and experienced professional craftsmen. Many general contractors in today’s world have cut back on their full-time people, but at H&H we believe that our ability to offer the best service to our customers hinges on the strength of our workforce. We typically have 80-100 full-time personnel and expand to 120-150 during peak construction periods.”
Mike Klaus, co-owner and CFO echoes Jim’s sentiments. “H&H’s longevity is a direct result of taking care of customers and hiring the finest craftsmen in the business. We are pleased to continue to serve the construction market and will strive to maintain the highest quality of workmanship we can provide.”

Taylorville Fire Station
The City of Taylorville is pleased to announce the groundbreaking of a new Fire Station. The new building will sit on the entire block surrounded by Walnut, Poplar, Main and a city alley. The firehouse will exit out onto Poplar and the improved (by the City) alley. H&H Construction Services, Inc. is serving as the general contractor and Evan Lloyd Associates, Inc. is providing the architectural services.
According to Mayor Frank Mathon, “This new facility was made possible by the efforts of so many individuals that it is impossible to name them all. At the Federal level, Sen. Durbin and Sen. Obama presented Taylorville with an initial grant of $500,000 to provide the impetus to plan this much needed project. Also, Gov. Blgojevich along with State Sen. Deanna Demuzio and State Rep. Gary Hannig supported this project with encouragement and grant dollars. The City Council in an 8 to 0 vote decided to build a high quality bricks and mortar building that will serve the citizens for decades to come. This facility combined with our planned and approved siren warning system will make Taylorville one of the most emergency-prepared communities in the State of Illinois.”
The building itself has a footprint of 17,900 sq.ft. However, it has in addition to the footprint, a 5,336 sq.ft. basement below the office area, another 5,336 sq.ft. second-story living/training area above the office area, and another 1,380 sq.ft. training mezzanine at the training/storage end of the building. The 12 door drive-through apparatus bay (where the fire trucks are parked) totals 11,200 sq.ft. so the entire facility actually consists of approximately 30,000 total sq.ft. of usable space.
The exterior or the building will be primarily brick, with a Dryvit or stucco-type material over the apparatus area doors for accent. The roof will be a standing seam roof with a 20-year material and labor warranty. There will be a training deck built on the roof above the training area to allow firemen to train in many different skills, including rappelling off the side of the building. There is a diesel powered generator included large enough to 100% power/heat/cool the building for over 24 hours in case of emergency. The basement will not be finished at this time until the city decides exactly what they would like to include in it. There are also a number of public meeting rooms included in the office area.
