This unique distribution facility was built for Excel Food Distribution, a subsidiary of Cargill, Inc. Excel distributes beef and pork to wholesalers in Missouri, Tennessee, Arkansas and Illinois. The 18,000 sq.ft. project is comprised of 4,500 sq.ft. of freezer space and 10,500 sq.ft. of refrigerated space. The freezer and refrigerator space is 30 ft. tall. The remaining 3,000 sq.ft. are devoted to offices and shipping. The new building can accommodate about 1400 pallet positions and is able to stage six trucks which each hold about 22 pallets. The staging area has to maintain a temperature of 32 degrees Fahrenheit. The facility is a pre-engineered metal building system with freezer-paneled roof, walls and floor. All dock and walk doors are designed for maximum temperature control during docking operations. Further, this project represents the first facility in the new I-255 Industrial Park in Pontoon Beach and occupies 2.5 acres. Ground was broken in September and Excel gained occupancy in April 2001.
